Factors influencing the manifestation of academic procrastination of students in the context of digitalization of the learning environment
Abstract
Context and relevance. The study of factors influencing academic procrastination of students in the context of digitalization of the educational environment is an urgent and multifaceted problem. In addition to the obvious advantages, the process of digitalization of the educational environment has many stressors associated with preparing students for virtual learning without the usual presence in the classroom. The sudden transition to a distance learning format requires adaptation, also affecting the processes of socialization and communication within study groups. In this context, some students cope successfully with the new demands, while others feel overwhelmed and become distracted from learning, which manifests itself in the form of procrastination, escapism, amotivation and internet addiction. Objective. To identify factors influencing the manifestation of academic procrastination among students in the context of digitalization of the learning environment. Hypothesis. There are significant differences in the severity of manifestation of factors of academic procrastination, academic motivation and Internet addiction in students with symptoms of procrastination compared to students without them. Methods and materials. The study involved 89 students aged 19 to 23 (M = 20,42; SD = 1,87; the following methods were used: Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (PASS), Chen Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS), Academic Motivation Scale (AMS-C), the author's questionnaire on the impact of the transition from full-time to distance learning. Results. Students with symptoms of academic procrastination were found to have: high rates of the academic procrastination factor “Laziness”; a tendency toward dismotivation; high rates of two factors of Internet addiction and one above-scale criterion. Conclusions. There are differences in the degree of expression of factors of academic procrastination, academic motivation and Internet addiction of students in the process of transition from a traditional to a digital educational environment.
