Standardization of the methodology “Teenagers about parents” (authors — L.I. Wasserman, I.A. Gorkovaya, E.E. Romitsyna; modification by Zh.G. Kulkova, V.V. Fedorov)
Abstract
Abstract Context and relevance. The study of adolescent-parent relationships is regarded by many domestic and international psychologists as a pressing issue in the theory and practice of modern educational and developmental psychology. The tools used to provide psychological support to adolescents rely on psychodiagnostic methods that enhance the effectiveness of psychological guidance, both within family relationships and in academic functioning. Objective. Psychometric validation of a modified version of the “Adolescents about Parents” method, intended for use in a digital format. Hypothesis. The modified version of the “Adolescents about Parents” instrument possesses the required psychometric properties (reliability and validity) for use in diagnostic purposes. Methods and materials. The standardization sample consisted of 1843 adolescents aged 13—17 (M = 14,86, Me = 15, SD = 1,26), including 914 (49,6%) males and 929 (50,4%) females. To examine the internal structure of the instrument, confirmatory factor analysis (DWLS estimator) was used; to assess reliability in terms of internal consistency, Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega were computed. External validity was evaluated using an additional measure, the Leary Interpersonal Relationships Diagnostic, and Spearman correlation was employed. Results. It was confirmed that the modified version of the “Adolescents about Parents” instrument has a five-factor structure with high scale reliability and validity. Conclusions. The results support the effective use of the instrument in a digital format for diagnosing the expression of five styles of child-parent interaction as perceived by mothers and fathers toward their adolescent children. The instrument enables comparison of the expression of child-parent relationship styles across adolescents, alignment with age norms, and assessment of their dynamics. The measure can be used by educational psychologists in work with adolescents aged 13 to 17.
