Exploring Ethnocultural Specifics through Comparative Analysis of Etymology of Words
Abstract
The paper presents outcomes of a comparative etymological analysis of some Russian and Uzbek words referring to emotions. The outcomes indicate that the etymology of some Russian words for certain emotional states (such as 'тревога' (anxiety), 'презрение' (contempt)) stems from the notions of their outer expressions, whereas their Uzbek equivalents ('хавотир', 'нафратланиш') focus on the cause and intensity of these emo¬tions. At the same time, several other Russian words for emotions (such as 'гнев' (anger), 'страх' (fear)) focus on the intensity of these emotional states, while Uzbek words ('жахл', 'кўркув') emphasize their physical and mental consequences. Still, closely related etymological roots can be traced in particular emotional states, for example, the sense of guilt: both Russian and Uzbek, though belonging to different language groups, reveal a shared concern with the necessity of punishment for the guilty, which, in the author's opinion, points to a cer¬tain universality of cognition.
