Students' readiness for professional activity: psychometric characteristics and comparative analysis
Abstract
Objective. The article examines the readiness of first- and fourth-year students for professional activity based on the interrelation of such professional personal qualities as academic motives, semantic proactive attitude to the future, subjective happiness, psychological reasonableness. Materials and methods. The empirical study was conducted in 2023 on a sample of students (N = 120) from 17 to 25 years old (M = 20.2; SD = 1.88), among whom 92.5% were female and 7.5% male, through an anonymous online questionnaire. The respondents’ data were evaluated using the methods “Academic Motivation Scale”, “Proactive attitudes”, “Life Satisfaction Scale”, “Subjective Happiness Scale”, “Psychological Reasonableness Scale”. Results. Statistical analysis of the results showed close direct links between the values of internal motivation (cognition, achievement, self-development), moderate direct links of internal motivation with a semantic proactive attitude to the future and weak direct links with subjective happiness. Intergroup comparisons revealed statistically significant differences in two indicators of psychological reasonableness related to the benefits of discussing experiences with others and openness to change, even if they involve risk. The readiness for professional activity of students is characterized by internal motives, a semantic proactive attitude towards the future, depending on the internal motives of achievement, and the expression of psychological reasonableness in fourth-year students.
