Abstract

Context and relevance. Rejection of one's own body is associated with serious psychological problems such as loneliness, depression, and eating disorders. In adolescence, the problem of perceiving one's own body becomes especially relevant. The article examines the relationship between ideas about child-parent relations and adolescent girls' satisfaction with their own bodies. Objective. To identify the relationship between ideas about child-parent relations and satisfaction with their bodies in teenage girls. Hypothesis. Body satisfaction among teenage girls is related to the nature of child-parent relationships, namely, a warmer, more trusting atmosphere in the family contributes to girls' satisfaction with their bodies. Methods and materials. The study involved 62 girls aged 14—17 (M = 15.6) and 11 mothers, 73 people in total. The following methods were used: “Self-body Image Questionnaire” by O.A. Skugarevsky, S.V. Sivukha, “Parent-child Interaction” by I.M. Markovskaya, “Child's Report of Parental Behavior Inventory” by E. Shafer, adapted by L.I. Wasserman, I.A. Gorkova, E.E. Romitsina, “Self-assessment Scale” T. Dembo—S.J. Rubinstein. Results. The results show that there is a link between adolescent girls' perceptions of their relationship with their parents and satisfaction with their own bodies. The relationship between self-esteem and some characteristics of child-parent relations is also shown. Predictors of attitudes towards their bodies in adolescent girls were identified in the sample under study. Conclusions. The body image of teenage girls is associated with ideas about relationships with their parents. In families with warmer, friendlier relationships, daughters are more likely to be satisfied with their bodies, while in families with an authoritarian parenting style and a high level of parental strictness, daughters are more likely to be dissatisfied with their bodies.
