The specificity of the relationship between resilience and civic and ethnic identity and strong-willed qualities among Buryat, Yakut and Russian youth
Abstract
Context and Relevance. In the context of multinational Russian society, the problem of the relationship between resilience and civic and ethnic identity and strong-willed qualities acquires particular significance.
Objective. To identify and compare the structure of the relationships between resilience components, civic and ethnic identity and strong-willed qualities in students of Buryat, Yakut, and Russian ethnicities.
Hypothesis. There are significant positive links between resilience components, indicators of civic and ethnic identity and strong-willed qualities in the groups studied; the structure of these relationships has an ethnocultural specificity, manifested in the strength and configuration of the correlation constellations in Buryats, Yakuts and Russians.
Methods and materials. The study involved 397 students from the Trans-Baikal Territory, the Republic of Buryatia, and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) aged 16 to 24. Diagnostics were carried out by the following methods: the test “Resilience of an Adult” (A.V. Makhnach), Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-28) (in adaptation of A.V. Makhnach and A.I. Laktionova), the Questionnaire of strong-willed Qualities of Personality (M.V. Chumakov), the Civic Identity Express Assessment Scale (A.N. Tatarko, N.M. Lebedeva), the Ethnic Identity Express Assessment Scale (N.M. Lebedeva). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used for data analysis.
Results. In all three groups, family and social ties have appeared as the universal resource of resilience. Purposefulness, energy, initiative, and responsibility have formed the universal regulatory core of strong-willed qualities. Spirituality demonstrated three cultural patterns: integrative in Russians, regulatory in Buryats, and contextual in Yakuts. The ethnic identity certainty proved to be more significant for the overall resilience of Yakuts; the positivity of civic identity is more significant for Russians. Independence is not related to resilience in any group, while among the Buryats a negative association with spirituality was found.
Conclusions. Family and social ties are strongly associated with overall resilience in subjects, regardless of nationality. Identity (ethnic and civic) is included in the system of personal resilience resources, but the nature of the relationships is culturally specific. Spirituality plays different roles in the three cultures. Independence is not associated with resilience components in the study groups.
