School Bullying and Teachers' Attitudes

6701

Abstract

The paper discusses how teachers and other people working in education perceive school bullying, its causes and effects in terms of the educational process. The ways in which adults respond to bullying definitely play an essential role in its escalation or reduction; this is why the paper focuses on the real practices of responding as well as on the possible ones as described by the subjects. The key outcome of our study is as follows: in spite of their aware¬ness of how to deal with school bullying, the adults mostly prefer to actively observe acts of bullying rather than to take any important steps in order to stop or prevent it. The paper reflects on the possible causes of such attitudes and suggests what can be done in order to transform them and to promote the implementation of bullying prevention programs across schools.
